Ugh. So for those of you who not only follow me, but have also sent me notes asking where I've been, here's brief low-down.
As you might know, I work for Massachusetts Government, in the Wildlife & Environmental division (in short, I'm a Wildlife Ranger/law enforcer) and recently, the Piping Plover (a threatened bird) has taken residence in Plymouth, Massachusetts (Pilgrims, Native Americans, Thanksgiving.... yes, THAT Plymouth!) and throughout Cape Cod & the islands. Not only that, but they're also nesting! So of course, I've been assigned to the task of monitoring all their habitats by truck, boat, and helicopter. Of course, understandably, this requires long hours outside every day. In fact, I've been working nearly 20-35 hours of overtime for the past three or four weeks now (putting me at 60-95 hours a week).
Also recently, we've closed down some of the Cape Cod beaches due to nesting grounds... and of course, tourists and residents are not happy. We've dealt with protestors (who obviously have no idea how deep the issue goes, as the Plovers are not only protected domestically, but internationally as well), as well as some random acts of violence towards the tiny birds. Four arrests have actually been made already (with charges ranging from Animal Cruelty, as well as threatening an endangered species). We've also had some Fox take notice of the birds, and have been trying to relocate any Fox we catch to the forests, and away from the beaches (after all, we protect ALL animals.) And as Fox are not overpopulating, we have no desire to kill them just for doing what foxes do.
Also, the Hunchback Whales are back and are nursing their new-born calves just off the cost of Race Point Beach in Provincetown, MA (a FABULOUSLY fun and beautiful gay community in the tippity-top of Cape Cod, I might add!!), so I've also been asked to collect data on the new additions to the Hunchback families (which is SO cool, since the data I collect will be shared internationally to other researchers!!!!). We've also noticed some Pilot Whale (which are actually dolphins, if you can believe that) and Basking Shark activity.... and even a few sightings of Great Whites near Truro!
And one more thing! (As "Uncle" from Jackie Chan Adventures would say!) I've also been hired by the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts to do a few educational illustrations that will be posted throughout the Historical and Conservation areas (meaning, both Historical illustrations, as well as Environmental) , AND published in Cape Cod magazines, and Plymouth tourist-pamphlets. Of course, this has currently taken priority since I only have until September 30th to get all 20 illustrations completed.
So as you see, I am very held up. I have not forgotten any requests, and I assure you that they will be done very soon (definitely within the next week)! Things should be back to normal fairly soon.
